December 16, 2010 5:15 pmSimple Words of Advice for Web Development, Design, and Online Marketing
Welcome to our first blog in a series of short, helpful tips for improving your website, materials, and online marketing strategies.
We thought it would be a good idea in this "short" to give you a breakdown of what Google recommends for content on your Website - Best Practices For Building Online Content. These are practices we follow when building Websites as they are key to good rankings. On that note: be VERY wary of "SEO Consultants" who don't tell you about these guidelines. Never hire anyone that tells you they can get you in to Google's top rankings. Usually that means that they will use tactics that eventually get your site banned for spamming. Here are a few of Google's Guidelines:
Best Practices To Building Online Content
- If you do nothing else do consider how you compose your page titles. I will say that the title of your pages is the single most important element of your page followed by quality keyword rich content, but don't over do it
- Incorporate keywords in your titles - your title should include keywords, not just for the search engines, but for your visitors
- Every page on your site should be reachable from at least one static text link
- Offer a site map to your users with links that point to the important parts of your site
- Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number
- Create a useful, information-rich site, and write pages that clearly and accurately describe your content
- Think about the words users would type to find your pages, and make sure that your site actually includes those words within it. (THIS IS KEY!)
- Try to use text instead of images to display important content. The Google crawler doesn't recognize text contained in images
- Check for broken links
Last but not least, write for your audience than for search engines. Too often we become obsessed with our page rankings and forget that its our readers that count the most, if you write content that's of value to your readers, they'll come back for more, they'll bookmark you, subscribe to your feeds, and probably even link to your site.
In our next issue we'll cover in detail the keyword selection process. Until then check out Search Engine Optimization: What Not To Do>>>
Whether you need a web site designed from scratch or you need your current website promoted through SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and/or SMM (Social Media Marketing), you are at the right place.
